Free forum hosting or a self-hosted forum: which should you choose?

“Free” and “self-hosted” aren’t better and worse versions of the same thing. They’re different deals, each with a real cost. Here is how to work out which one fits your community.

Two models

A hosted forum service runs the forum software on its own servers and gives you a forum inside its platform. You sign up, pick a name and a style, and start posting. The service usually earns its money from adverts on free forums and from paid upgrades: removing adverts, a custom domain, more storage or extra features. ProBoards, Forumotion and Create A Forum work this way.

A self-hosted forum runs on web hosting you rent. You install free, open-source forum software such as MyBB, phpBB or SMF, on your own domain. You pay for the hosting and the domain, and you’re in charge of the software. Traxio.uk provides this kind of hosting.

The real cost of each

A free hosted forum costs no money, but it isn’t without cost. Your members see adverts you didn’t choose, the address belongs to the service, and your community’s history lives in a database you usually can’t download. Ad-free and custom-domain upgrades are often priced monthly, sometimes depending on your traffic.

A self-hosted forum costs a little money and some of your time. On Traxio.uk that’s £0.99 a month after 30 free days (£11.88 a year, no VAT added) plus a domain, usually around £8–£12 a year, and an afternoon to set up. After that, you’re spending perhaps fifteen minutes a month on updates and backups.

When free hosting is the right call

  • Your budget is genuinely zero, and adverts won’t put your members off.
  • The forum is short-lived: an event, a class, a project with an end date.
  • You don’t want any technical responsibility at all.
  • You’re testing whether a community will form before committing.

When self-hosting is the right call

  • You’re building something you want to still exist in five or ten years.
  • Owning the data matters: members’ contributions, your archive, your ability to move.
  • You want a particular piece of software, theme or add-on.
  • You want your own address, no third-party adverts, and a predictable price.
  • The community represents a club, business or organisation that needs its own identity.

The middle ground

If you’re unsure, you don’t have to guess. Traxio.uk’s free 30 days are the complete hosting account with no card required, so you can set up a real self-hosted forum, invite a few people, and see how it feels before paying anything. If it isn’t for you, let it lapse and nothing is charged.

Common questions

Is free forum hosting really free?

Hosted forum services such as ProBoards, Forumotion and Create A Forum let you run a forum at no cost, usually paid for by adverts shown on your forum, with paid upgrades to remove them. Traxio.uk is different: free for 30 days, then £0.99 a month, with no adverts.

Is self-hosting a forum difficult?

It’s more involved than a hosted service but not difficult: register a domain, point it at your hosting, and install the forum from a one-click installer. Most people are done in an afternoon. The ongoing work is applying updates and keeping backups.

Can I start free and move later?

You can, but moving off a hosted service is rarely a clean copy, because most don’t provide a database you can import. If you think you’ll want your own hosting eventually, it’s easier to start there.

What does a self-hosted forum really cost per year?

On Traxio.uk: £11.88 a year for hosting after the free month, plus your domain (usually around £8–£12 a year). Optional add-ons such as more storage are priced publicly.
