Your forum’s domain name: choose it, register it, connect it

Traxio.uk hosting needs a domain you own. That’s the one step hosted forum services skip, so here is all of it — what to pick, where to buy it, and how to point it at your forum without getting stuck.

Why a forum needs its own domain

Hosted forum services give you an address on their domain, something like yourforum.theirservice.com. It’s convenient, but every link, bookmark and search result points at an address you don’t control. If you ever leave, none of it comes with you.

A domain you register yourself is the one part of your forum that survives everything else changing. Move host, switch from MyBB to phpBB, redesign the whole thing: the address stays the same, so members and search engines keep finding you. That’s why Traxio.uk hosting always runs on a domain you own.

Choosing a good name

  • Say it out loud. “I posted it on yourname” should sound natural, and a listener should be able to type it without asking how it’s spelt.
  • Short beats clever. Two or three words at most. Avoid hyphens and numbers, which people forget.
  • Describe the community, not the software. vintagevespaowners.co.uk tells people what they’ll find; myforum2026.com doesn’t.
  • Check you’re not stepping on a brand. A name that’s a near-miss of a company or an existing community invites confusion and, occasionally, legal letters.
  • Check social handles too, if you’ll want matching accounts to promote the forum.

Registering the domain

You can register a domain at any domain registrar. Traxio.uk hosting doesn’t include one, which keeps your domain and your hosting separate: if you ever change host, you simply point the domain somewhere else.

When you compare registrars, look at:

  • The renewal price, not only the first-year offer.
  • Whether they let you change nameservers yourself. Nearly all do; a few budget “website builder” bundles make it awkward.
  • Privacy of your contact details in the public WHOIS record. Many registrars include this free.
  • Auto-renew and a working email address on the account. An expired domain takes your forum offline; see what happens when a domain expires.

Root domain, subdomain or folder?

You can put the forum in one of three places, and it’s worth deciding before you install:

Where the forum lives, and when each makes sense.
AddressBest whenNotes
yourforum.comThe forum is the siteThe simplest option for most new communities.
forum.yoursite.comYou already have a website elsewhereThe main site can stay where it is; only the subdomain points here. Creating a subdomain

A second forum on a different domain needs an extra domain add-on (£0.99, once) and usually its own database (£0.99, once). A subdomain or folder on your existing domain doesn’t need the domain add-on.

Connecting the domain to Traxio

There are two ways to point a domain at your hosting. Most people should use the first.

Option 1: change the nameservers (recommended)

Nameservers tell the internet which company answers questions about your domain. Pointing them at Traxio lets your hosting manage everything: the website, email records and the SSL certificate.

  1. Find the nameservers in your Traxio welcome email.
  2. Log in at your registrar and find the domain’s DNS or nameserver settings. Where to find them at common registrars.
  3. Replace every existing nameserver with the Traxio ones. Leaving an old one in the list causes intermittent problems.
  4. Save, then leave it alone. Changes usually take effect within a few hours, occasionally up to 24.

Option 2: A records (if your DNS lives elsewhere)

If your domain’s DNS is managed somewhere you want to keep it, for example at Cloudflare or because you already use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 email on it, point just the website at Traxio with A records instead. See connecting a domain with A records.

Checking it worked

Once the change has taken effect, visiting your domain shows your hosting account’s default page (or your forum, once it’s installed), and the free SSL certificate is issued automatically so the address works with https://. If it still isn’t working after 24 hours, work through how to check your domain is pointing to Traxio before contacting the help desk.

You don’t need to wait to install your forum: Softaculous can install it while DNS is still catching up. Carry on with installing forum software.

Common questions

How much does a domain name cost?

A .com or .co.uk usually costs somewhere around £8–£12 a year at mainstream registrars. Check the renewal price as well as the first-year price, because some registrars discount the first year heavily and charge more after.

Can I use a free subdomain instead?

Not on Traxio.uk: forums here run on a domain you own, and there are no free traxio.uk subdomains. If you already have a website, you can put the forum on a subdomain of your domain, such as forum.yoursite.com, at no extra cost.

How long does it take for a domain to start working?

After you change nameservers, usually a few hours, occasionally up to 24. You can install the forum software while you wait.

Can I use Cloudflare with my forum?

Yes. Cloudflare is supported, including its proxy, and it’s the only CDN Traxio supports. If your DNS is at Cloudflare, connect the domain with A records rather than changing nameservers.

Should I choose .com or .co.uk?

If your community is mainly in the UK, .co.uk or .uk reads naturally and is often cheaper. If it’s international, .com is the safe default. Whichever you choose, avoid anything people will mistype.
