Create your own forum, on your own terms

The technical part takes about ten minutes and needs no code. The rest of this page is about the part that actually decides whether a forum works — and it is free to try for 30 days.

Seven steps to a forum with people in it

Steps two to four are mechanical. One, five, six and seven are the ones that matter.

  1. Decide what it is for, in one sentence

“A forum for people restoring 1990s Japanese motorbikes.” Specific beats broad every time: a narrow subject gives people a reason to join, and board structure, tone and moderation rules all follow from it. A general discussion forum for everyone is a forum for nobody.

  2. Register a domain name

Short, easy to say out loud, and not a near-miss of an existing community. About £8–£12 a year from any registrar. Buy it yourself from a registrar so it stays yours — the hosting plan doesn’t include one.

  3. Get hosting that runs PHP and MySQL

That is all forum software needs. Create a free Traxio account: no card details, 30 days free, then £0.99 a month. You will get DirectAdmin access and the nameservers to point your domain at.

  4. Install the forum software

Softaculous in DirectAdmin installs MyBB, phpBB or SMF from a form and creates the database for you. Five minutes. Pick MyBB if you are unsure — it is the gentlest of the three and there is no shame in changing later.

  5. Create three or four boards, and lock the door against spam

Fewer boards than feels right. Then, before anyone can register: turn on email verification, enable a CAPTCHA, and moderate first posts. Spam bots find new forums within days, and cleanup is far more work than prevention.

  6. Seed the discussions your community already has

Every community repeats the same five or six conversations. Post them as real topics, with a real opinion in each — not “Introduce yourself!”. Nobody replies to an empty forum, and nobody replies to a question nobody has.

  7. Invite twenty people, not two thousand

Ask individuals who will actually post, from wherever your community already gathers. Twenty people talking looks alive. Two thousand registrations with no posts looks abandoned, and first impressions of a forum are permanent.

Self-hosted, or a forum service?

You can have a forum in five minutes on a hosted service. It is a reasonable choice, and the trade is always the same: convenience now against control later.

On a hosted service the address is usually theirs, the export is limited or absent, the theme choices are set, adverts may appear, and the rules can change. When you self-host, you get the database, the domain, the templates and the mod list — and in exchange you are the one who clicks “upgrade” and reads the release notes.

For a community you want to still exist in five years, self-hosting is the safer bet, and at 99p a month the cost argument has largely disappeared. Free or self-hosted? sets out the trade-offs, and the set-up planner turns these steps into a checklist.

What new forum owners get wrong

  • Too many boards. Empty categories read as failure. Start with three.
  • Opening before seeding. Arrive to a forum with no posts and you leave.
  • No anti-spam until it is a problem. By then there are 400 accounts to delete.
  • Broken registration email. Members never verify, and you never find out why. Set up SPF and DKIM on day one.
  • Waiting for a perfect theme. A default theme with conversation in it beats a beautiful empty forum.
  • Announcing everywhere at once. A slow trickle of people who post beats a spike of people who look once.

Questions about creating a forum

How do I create my own forum?

Four things: a domain name, hosting with PHP and MySQL, forum software installed on it, and a handful of boards with some real discussions in them. With Traxio the middle two take about ten minutes — Softaculous installs MyBB, phpBB or SMF and creates the database for you. The last one is the actual work.

Do I need to know how to code to make a forum?

No. MyBB, phpBB and SMF are administered entirely through a web interface: boards, permissions, themes and moderation are all forms and checkboxes. You may eventually edit a template to change a colour, but nothing about running a forum requires programming.

How much does it cost to create a forum?

Here: nothing for 30 days, then £0.99 a month for hosting, plus roughly £8–£12 a year for the domain name. So a full year of running your own forum on your own domain is about £20–£24 all in.

Should I use a forum service instead of hosting my own?

Hosted forum services are quicker to start and take the maintenance off you, but you are renting: their address, their limits, their rules, and often adverts. Self-hosting takes an extra hour at the beginning and gives you the database. If you plan to still be running this in five years, self-host.

How many boards should a new forum have?

Three or four. Ten empty boards look abandoned; three busy ones look alive. You can always split a busy board later, and splitting a busy board is a much nicer problem than merging four dead ones.

How do I get the first members?

Personally, one at a time, from wherever your community already gathers — and after you have seeded real discussions so there is something to reply to. Your first 100 members goes through what actually works.
